The Phoenix Conservatory of Music is proud to announce a new partnership with Paradise Valley Community College. This summer, starting in June, current PCM students who are rising High School Juniors, Seniors and new HS Graduates will be able to take programs at Phoenix Conservatory of Music for College Credit!!
“This is the most college prep thing we have ever done!” exclaims Tom Cooke, a rising high school senior who has been a part of PCM’s College Prep Program for the last five years. Students who have been in the program take part of instruction and classwork that mimics, on a smaller scale, what happens in a collegiate music program. This new and exciting partnership takes that process to a whole new level. “What we are doing is trying to create a seamless pipeline and pathway to college via music programs and passions that young people have,” says PCM Executive Director, Regina Nixon. “The opportunity for students to register for Maricopa County Community College District, receive guided registration assistance, and take classes to earn college credit will not only give students and families a competitive edge for future admittance and scholarship opportunities, but truly create an understanding and awareness of what it takes to be successful navigating the collegiate experience and take away the stigma of participating and affording college.”
The summer programs consist of a one credit music theory boot camp which is a continuation of what students have been learning during the course of the academic year, and a live sound reinforcement fundamentals class. These experiences will lead directly into College Freshman Level Music Theory and Aural Perception, which is where a lot of music majors get into trouble their first year. Students coming out of these programs will be more prepared to succeed in their post high school education and be more college and career ready.
Paradise Valley Community College is able to offer limited scholarships to students to take these programs, and Phoenix Conservatory of Music’ goal is to be able to match the number of scholarships that PVCC is able to offer. To learn more about providing scholarships for this specific opportunity, please contact Regina Nixon at 623.826.0625 or email regnixon@pcmrocks.org.
